In the Sherwood ShelvingTM system a component is an individual item that has been manufactured to combine with other components to create an organization system. (e.g. an adjustable shelf, a gable, a toe kick, the side of a drawer box, etc.).
Units are created by combining a number of components. They are designed with a specific purpose and function (eg. a double hang unit, a long hang unit or a tower with drawers, etc). Occasionally, in a unit we will refer to smaller functional parts as a unit (eg. in a tower with drawers, the drawers would be considered units as they are made from a number of component parts and have a separate function within the unit).
