Murphy Wall-Bed Information

Manufacturing Details and Restrictions for Murphy Wall-Bed Cabinets

A Murphy Wall-Bed System—also known as a pull-down or fold-down bed—is an innovative, space-saving solution designed to maximize floor space and provide versatile functionality. Sherwood Shelving is proud to partner with  Murphy Wall-Beds, offering a variety of sizes and styles to meet your design and space requirements.

Design Overview

Please note that the Murphy Wall Bed uses an Inset Door style, meaning the doors sit flush with the front of the gables. This design is essential for the bed’s operation and cannot be altered.

When additional cabinets are installed beside the Murphy Bed, those units will use our standard half-overlay door style, resulting in a slightly different appearance from the wall bed. This is expected and unavoidable due to functional design requirements.

Designing in ClosetPro

When designing a Murphy Wall Bed in ClosetPro, you can access the Edit Unit settings to make modifications. However, certain changes available in the software cannot be manufactured due to the specific structural and safety requirements of the Murphy Bed system.

Below are the settings with restrictions or exceptions:

• Door Style

While ClosetPro allows you to select from our three door styles—Euro Slab, Terzetto, or Shaker—please note that Sherwood Shelving cannot manufacture a Murphy Wall Bed using the Shaker Door style. The Shaker design features narrow stiles and rails with a thin center panel that cannot safely support the load of a person when the bed is in use. For safety and durability, only the Euro Slab or Terzetto door styles may be used.

• Backing

ClosetPro may show a single full-piece backing option; however, this panel is too large to ship and will be cut in half.
Additionally, the headboard and bottom cleat are essential structural components and cannot be removed. During installation, the backing must be cut to fit between the top shelf and the top of the headboard. Installers may add additional lower backing as desired.

• Vert Feet

Although Vert Feet appears as an option in ClosetPro, feet cannot be added to a Murphy Bed due to its specific design and wall-mounting requirements.

• Cleats

The Cleat option is not applicable for Murphy Bed units. Any changes made to this setting in ClosetPro will not affect manufacturing.

• Strip Lighting

Sherwood Shelving can install strip lighting in the gables (vertical panels), but this information is not exported from ClosetPro to our production system. If you would like to include strip lighting, please notify Sherwood Shelving via email, referencing the job number and design details.

• Top Shelf Lighting

Similarly, ClosetPro does not export information for top shelf puck lighting. If you would like to include lighting in the top shelf, please indicate the number of puck lights and provide these details in your email to Sherwood Shelving.

Important Installation Note

According to Murphy Wall-Beds, when adding cabinets beside the main Murphy Bed unit, each additional cabinet must have its own independent gable (vertical panel). Shared gables are not permitted, as this would compromise the structure and safe operation of the Murphy Bed.
